Editorial Review:
Amazon.com: The fourth Dirty Harry film is a complete embarrassment to memories of the stunning Don Siegel movie that started the franchise. Gratuitous and somehow sleazy, this cop flick finds Eastwood's Harry Callahan searching for a female serial killer (Sondra Locke) who happens to be a vengeful rape victim ridding the world of guys who can't take "no" for an answer. The whole silly Callahan myth--the way he'll just stand in the shadows with his big gun until the bad guys realize they're going to die--almost makes one wonder how Eastwood survived this junk to become an A-list director in his winter years. Best known for the line "Go ahead, make my day." --Tom Keogh

My wife and I watched a couple of Dirty Harry movies ("Dirty Harry" and "The Enforcer"). We enjoyed them both. Then we switched and watched about 8 of Clint Eastwood's western movies. All were excellent. I guess we just like to watch Clint Eastwood movies. Now we're back to a couple more Dirty Harry movies and last night brought "Sudden Impact."
Clint Eastwood plays very much the same character in any movie featuring him, at least with the ones we've watched. Eastwood is the tough guy who ... Read More

"Sudden Impact", was probably the worst Dirty Harry film of the series. Sondra Locke was annoying, on screen. Even the key scene, (Who's We...Sucker? Harry replies..."Smith and Wesson and Me".) that's highlighted in the trailer, was sloppy and didn't make sense. He pulls out he's magnum so slowly, the crooks had all the time in the world to react, but just stood there.

"Sudden Impact" (1983) attempts to blend the traditional Harry Callahan crime thriller with a film noir story centering on a vengeful rape victim. The results never quite gel, yet Clint Eastwood's direction is sharp and stylish - certainly preferable to the made-for-TV sloppiness of 1976's "The Enforcer." Hugely abetted by Clint's immortal "Make my day" line, "Sudden Impact" became Dirty Harry's biggest box-office hit (though no match for the 1971 Don Siegel original).

Wow, the Amazon review doesn't do justice. It chucks the baby with the bathwater. Yes, Harry showing up out of nowhere in the end, one cliche line, and violence that's almost over the top are arguable weak points in the movie. But there are too many other things that trump its few faults to give it less than 4 stars. It is quite entertaining overall and for the most part drips with atmosphere and moment to moment suspense. The soundtrack by Lalo Schiffron is wicked, as is Clint Eastwoods Harry ... Read More

I found this to be long and drawn out as far as the Dirty Harry movies go. I found it to be too graphic, and too violent for my taste. I actually found myself falling asleep watching this movie, and when I woke up it was still on. I wouldn't even recommend this to anyone who was desparate for a movie. Curl up with a good book instead. I know the one thing I couldn't stand was the fat hag who encourgaed the rape in the first place. The movie is standard "Dirty Harry" faire, but it was just too long, ... Read More
