Amazon.com:
Clint Eastwood is a down-and-out cop who is sent on a routine mission to pick up a witness and deliver her to the Phoenix courthouse. Sounds easy until he realizes he's been set up by the man who gave him this simple assignment. The interplay between Eastwood and the witness, a clever prostitute played by the actor's former girlfriend, Sondra Locke, is tough and playful. They obviously had strong chemistry. The story is highly implausible at times, but the action sequences are satisfying. Eastwood directs The Gauntlet very much in the style of his Academy Award-winning Western Unforgiven. Although the body count is surprisingly low for an Eastwood action film, a house, several cars, and a large bus get shot through with more holes than a big wheel of Swiss cheese. For Eastwood fans, this is the laconic hero at his prime. --Richard Natale

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - Great Blu-ray transfer
I usually don't comment on movies, but this one is especially noteworthy for Eastwood fans. For a movie that was shot in 1977, the Blu-ray picture transfer on this movie is excellent. Since there was no such thing as DTS Master Audio in 1977, or even digital audio for that matter, the sound quality is therefore mediocre at best but it's still watchable. Unless it's under $10 bucks, I generally never buy Blu-ray movies that were not originally shot on HD equipment. These old transfers are kind ... Read More

Rating: 3 out of 5 stars - Gauntlet
The movie came in a short time and we enjoyed it. The price was good also.

Rating: 4 out of 5 stars - Over the top fun- 70's style!
I watched this last night for the first time since seeing it on HBO in the early 1980's. I love about every Clint Eastwood movie I've ever seen, and this is no exception! Sure, as others have pointed out, you have to suspend belief (like any other action movie today) and the end is a bit over the top- but it's just a fun, action packed thrill ride. There are actualy some very good performances and the characters are interesting. Just sit back and enjoy a good time action flick- 70's style!

Rating: 4 out of 5 stars - Hokey fun
The Bottom Line:

As long as you don't approach The Gauntlet with anything close to a literal mindset you'll probably have a good time: Clint is in top form as Clint the Cop (back before he could play anyone else) escorting a prisoner back to Arizona when all heck breaks loose, and the movie is stupidly enjoyable from start to finish.

3/4

Rating: 4 out of 5 stars - Over the top and entertaining
In the 1970s when star/director Clint Eastwood was at the top of his game, I guess he still is, he made a cop movie, The Gauntlet, that poked fun at his super-cop mystique he created in the Dirty Harry movies. Eastwood is Ben Shockley, a Phoenix police officer who joined the force for all the right reasons but he's been beaten down over the years as he waits for his big case. He seems to get a shot at it with orders to extradite a prisoner from Vegas, Gus Mally who happens to be a prostitute testifying ... Read More
